A Good Start To The Appalachian Trail

Our packs weighed well above the recommended weight for embarking on an endeavor such as ours, but we felt confident in our abilities, considering our combined years of experience backpacking through the blue ridge mountains. Then we got lost in the parking lot.

After asking around we found out that we had to climb up these stairs which lead to the top of amicalola falls. The views were almost as breathtaking as the ascent..

Eventually we got to the top, threw down our packs, and took a couple puffs from the inhaler. The two guys who helped us find our way to the base of the falls were relaxing on a bench near us. We asked them where to go from here and they once again pointed us in the right direction.. The rest of the approach trail went well. Except I snapped a buckle off my brand new backpack because I yanked on it like a Neanderthal. This made me feel bad because Osprey went to a lot of effort to get me this park before we started our thru hike. Maybe I’ll learn a lesson for once and be patient and take care of my things? Maybe not. But all of this is neither here nor there so let us get back to our reason for writing today.

But there’s nothing left to say, for we made it to the summit of springer mountain right before sunset. With just enough time to cook chicken and mashed potatoes, read a chapter of slaughterhouse 5 (our trailbook) before falling asleep. And besides listening to all the rain and the bear trying to get into our food and the dreams about fending off crazed serial killers in the night there isn’t much more to note.

Til next time,
Daniel and Lizzy.

You sure do learn a lot about a person when you go on a walk across the country together. Tents aren't huge, ya know. The Appalachian Trail is a 2193 mile long journey in which you hike from town to town across the Eastern United States, starting in Georgia and ending in Maine. It is long and full of ups and downs. No literally. There are so many mountains. The cold nights, the beautiful sunsets, the bugs, the trees, the emotions, and the memories. All that is hard to describe and put into words. It was beautiful, and I hope everyone gets to experience that for whatever that means to you. We sold my car and bought a van recently. Having just one car poses problems when working at two different seasonal jobs in a new area. Oh well, that’s the gift hindsight gives you. We have been saving up money and are planning on fixing it and living out of it full-time, hopefully before or right after our wedding in September of 2022. Or who knows, those goals are loose, and life is crazy. But that’s the dream, and we are sure going to try.
