Spring is upon us. Over the past month the Appalachian mountains have blossomed with life. All the forest critters are coming out of their winter refuge. Baby bunnies hop along the trail beside us as we make our way to Maine. Lizards scurry across our path as we turn round narrow green corridors peppered with pink rhododendron flowers in bloom. Grazing deer awkwardly gallop down mountainsides after eyeing us curiously as we pass by. Snakes slither across the rafters of our shelters, stalking the nest of baby birds chirping away, ignorant of the danger stalking them. Half naked hippies are sitting in pooling creeks, hiding from the noontime heat.

Spring is upon us! Now we welcome the rain whereas in winter we fear it. Now, thunder rings out from a distance like cavalry trumpeters, and dirty hikers cheer as the rainfall closes in, for all they see is a free shower heading their way. Though such cheerful glee is often short lived, as lightning has its way of lingering near cliff sides and tall mountains.

Spring is upon us! Now is the time to be out in the wild. Or to walk through the rain. To splash into swimming holes and to lay in the sun. Happy are we who sing out in song of springtime reverie.
