Backpacking on the Pinhoti Trail

Where:📍Alabama/Georgia

When: Wintertime (Jan)

We are states away from our van, and we gotta walk back to get to it. We are hiking the Pinhoti trail!

Flag mountain in Alabama (the southern terminus )

It is a 330 trail that walks along the Appalachian mountains through Alabama and Georgia.

There are towns along the way that we will resupply at and maybe even take an occasional shower at.

So far, the Pinhoti has been beautiful and unique.

Being the middle of winter, we have excellent views from the ridgeline.

The trail is relatively unpopular, and we rarely saw another person when hiking.

Even though this trail is lesser known than others, it still has a fantastic community of trail angels surrounding it.

We stopped in Talledega to avoid some weather and found the Next Step Hostel.

Shoutout to Jeff and Nancy for being such awesome human beings.

Our weather has been ideal so far but it looks like we will have to march through some storms in the coming days.

…

We have been wandering down country highways, through backyards, along forgotten dirt roads, and across lonely ridgelines.

Hiking the Pinhoti trail has given us a healthy dose of adventure and excitement. Sprawling stands of longleaf pines contrasted with muddy red clay underfoot and cloudless blue skies above are certainly different from the long green tunnels we have hiked thru before.

We have had some of our favorite sunsets and sunrises on this trail. Hiking in January with no leaves has its perks.

You sure do learn a lot about a person when you go on a walk across the country together. Tents aren't huge, ya know. The Appalachian Trail is a 2193 mile long journey in which you hike from town to town across the Eastern United States, starting in Georgia and ending in Maine. It is long and full of ups and downs. No literally. There are so many mountains. The cold nights, the beautiful sunsets, the bugs, the trees, the emotions, and the memories. All that is hard to describe and put into words. It was beautiful, and I hope everyone gets to experience that for whatever that means to you. We sold my car and bought a van recently. Having just one car poses problems when working at two different seasonal jobs in a new area. Oh well, that’s the gift hindsight gives you. We have been saving up money and are planning on fixing it and living out of it full-time, hopefully before or right after our wedding in September of 2022. Or who knows, those goals are loose, and life is crazy. But that’s the dream, and we are sure going to try.
